The originator of the Serbian drama, Jovan Sterija Popović, in his
first comedy “The Liar and the Arch Liar” points out that we tend to
achieve our personal interests through lies and deception, which is
the phenomenon present even today.
This classic work of Serbian literature is a story of two swindlers
and their lies that are accepted as true, as they compete who will
lie more and be more persuasive. Although lie is in the focus of at-
tention, and the majority of characters are deceived, this is a breezy
comedy which refers to the present time in many aspects.
And the truth spoken in jest is most effective, or as Sterija put it:
„In my opinion, the easiest way to become a better person is to start
laughing at your own foolishness.”
