With the production of Chekhov for Two we exposed Canadian theatre
goers to the characteristically comic side of Chekhov as opposed to
the serious, if not downright lugubrious Russian playwright usually
- and erroneously – conveyed by dramaturges and their ilk in North
America. We are trying to reform the popular western misconception
of Chekhov as a puritan. Even at the moments of greatest tension
and poignancy in his works, his humour keeps creeping in. That’s
exactly what is happening in the play, when two characters take a stroll through the graveyard and reminisce about people they once
knew, people now dead and buried here.
“Chekhov for Two is director Tatiana Chouljenko’s attempt to change
this view (about Chekhov)...and she more than proves her point by
adapting eight of his short stories to the stage...It’s both gripping and
darkly comic – proving that sometimes the funniest parts of life are
found in melancholy .“
