Nušić called “Rent” “A Joke in Two Acts”. Is it a joke today, has it
ever been a joke? When I read “Rent” again after so many times,
I wondered what the whole “Nušić’s game would be like today?
What would happen with a family that lives like the Nušić’s family
in this adaptation? Are there people today who work honestly and
righteously (if they have a job) and still do not make both ends meet,
who, like Nušić’s heroes, cannot pay the rent? What should they do?
How can they protect their family, if they have it, from breakdown?
Unless it has already disintegrated? Should they rebel, go on strike,
steal, kill…? Should they cut their fngers off?
And thus, thinking about all this, and about the Nušić’s “Joke”, I
created this drama. Logically, I kept everything I could from Nušić.
Yet, maybe it went out of control a little bit; maybe all that is much
more than a joke. Because Nušić is always Nušić.
