…What is the story of the drama “Top Hat”? The old fool was cheated,
and given a few moments of illusion, for which he paid so dearly. In
the Marchelli’s show, the joy comes from something else, from the
very life-creative energy of the theatre, in which there is both “magic”
and its unveiling.

… And the Marchelli’s “Top Hat” has been created precisely on that
principle, violently and brilliantly. The director’s favourite stage
concept, which surpasses the theatrical concept of a theatre, is here
laconic and appropriate.

… To put it briefy, Marchelli did his best to create cunningly and
humorously, in a special theatrical manner, the story about the top
hat, which is much closer to the contemporary spectator. On the other
hand, he does not keep everything under control but, instead of that,
he presents brilliant but not simple theatrical experiences. From my
point of view, the frst scene of the second act at the dining table has
been conceived masterfully. Interpreting her role on the verge of a
fault, on the verge of vulgarity, the actress E. Krizhanovskaya (Rita),
fnally leaves the impression of pleasant piquancy, biting and elegant
artistic courage. And we could speak a lot about the actor Alexeyev.
His abnormal musicality gives precision and impeccability to his each
movement, each intonation. We rarely have the opportunity to see such performing quality in a modern theatre, especially with comedies. It involves charm, and allurement, and feelings, and cat-like precision. We can only fing our hats into the air!
