The premier of Alexei Levinski’s “The Gamblers” was held at “Okolo” Theatre in April 2007. The play presents his favourite topic: corrupt countries in which, unfortunately, we all live alongside Gogol’s characters and Durmenkov types. In “The Gamblers”, Levinski is not so much interested in his own game as he is in the game of mind and the mechanism of illusion.
Levinski prides himself on the fact that he can direct whatever he wants. Everywhere and always. His works may be enjoyed or not, objectively accepted or not, but whatever the case, there is no medium.
Natalia Kazmina

In Levinski’s play, the gambling game grows into a metaphor for other games: both political and economic. Thinking people in dark threesomes – in new suits, comfortably laid out in soft chairs, looking so much like one another that it’s impossible to tell the lackey from the lord, man from woman (the gambler Krugel is played by the actress Natalia Pozdnyakova), cheater from cheater. Actors act out their lines with such conviction that each word has a predetermined meaning, when through this accuracy, bleakness quietly makes itself known. Here, the most important characters are not Gogol’s quarrelsome heroes with foreign names, but the ever-present, all encompassing illusion...
